Research at the Institute of Genetics is focused on identifying the molecular genetic causes of inherited diseases and other hereditary traits in domestic animals. We offer some genetic tests that resulted from our research as a service for different species.

The Next Generation Sequencing Platform (NGSP) is an interfaculty core facility and supports cutting-edge sequencing experiments. The NGSP is located in the laboratories of the Institute of Genetics.

Prix Jean-Pierre Miéville 2024

Matthias Christen, PhD, was awarded the Prix Jean-Pierre Miéville 2024 for his PhD Thesis entitled "Genetic analysis of inherited canine neurological disorders".

AHS Award Anerkennungspreis 2023

Sarah Kiener, PhD, received the AHS Recognition Award on the 8 November 2024 for her professional and outstanding scientific work entitled "ABHD5 frameshift deletion in Golden Retrievers with ichthyosis".

WAB President’s Award - 2024 World Buiatrics Congress

Joana Jacinto, PhD, Dip. ECBHM, a clinical scientist at the Clinic for Ruminants and the Institute of Genetics, received the World Association for Buiatrics (WAB) President's Award (€3,000), which recognizes the active participation of a young veterinarian presenter at the 2024 World Buiatrics Congress (WBC) in Cancun, Mexico, and she will be invited to the next biennial WBC in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2026 to receive her award.

Best Talk Award - 11th Leipziger Doktorand:innen Forum 2024

Stefan Rietmann, a PhD student at the Institute of Genetics, won the best talk award at the 11th Leipziger Doktorand:innen Forum 2024. The award was given for his work entitled “A duplication disrupts the open reading frame of MFSD8 in Small Swiss Hounds with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis”.

Best Poster Award - 12th International Conference on Canine and Feline Genetics and Genomics

Cleo Schwarz, a PhD student at the Institute of Genetics, won the best poster award at the 12th International Conference on Canine and Feline Genetics and Genomics in Helsinki. The award was given for her work entitled “EFNB3 frameshift variant in Weimaraner dogs with synchronous bunny-hopping gait”.
